It is always a danger
To aspirants
on
the path
When they begin
to believe
and act
as if the ten thousand idiots
who so long ruled
and lived
inside
have all packed their bags
and skipped town
or died.

Hafiz

The artist knows something else, wordless, oftentimes, but she knows it deep within her: that if it were not for the struggle and the loneliness she undergoes in her search for integrity there would be no strength or beauty in her work. (And though art is not for the sake of beauty, beauty must be there or the profound  revelation the artist makes would be unbearable.)

The artist in us knows, the poet in us knows: it is the mark not of ordeal but of mastered ordeal that gives a face, a life, a great event or a great work of art its style. The wound is there but the triumph also, the death and the birth, the pain and the deep satisfactions: it is all there in delicate equilibrium, speaking to us.

Lillian Smith, novelist
(I changed gender pronouns)

All theologies are straws His Sun burns to dust;
Knowing takes you to the Threshold, but not through the Door.
Nothing can teach you if you don't unlearn everything.
How learned I was, before Revelation made me dumb.

Rumi

Everyone should carefully observe which way his heart draws him, and then choose that way with all his strength.

Hasidic Saying

Tree

It is foolish
to let a young redwood
grow next to a house.

Even in this
one lifetime,
you will have to choose.

That great calm being,
this clutter of soup pots and books --

Already the first branch-tips brush at the window.
Softly, calmly, immensity taps at your life.

Jane Hirshfield

The second you stepped into this world of existence
A ladder was placed before you to help you escape it.
Rumi

Whatever it is that's awakening us is much more intelligent than who we become when we are awakened. Richard Moss, M.D.

Not to transmit an experience is to betray it. Elie Wiesel
Things behave in alignment with how the observer expects them to behave, so as we change our collective story about the state of the world, the state of the world also changes.

 Arjuna Ardagh

Oh, this is the animal that never was.
They hadn't seen one; but just the same, they loved
its graceful movements, and the way it stood
Looking at them calmly, with clear eyes.

It had not been. But for them, it appeared
in all its purity. They left space enough.
And in the space hollowed out by their love
it stood up all at once and didn't need

existence. They nourished it, not with grain,
but with the mere possibility of its being.
And finally, this gave it so much power

that from its forehead a horn grew. One horn.
It drew near to a virgin, white, gleaming-
and was, inside the mirror and in her.

Rainer Maria Rilke

Dear Jan,

Every year I'm at the IWWG Writing Conference, I go to visit my former high school English teacher, without whom there would BE no Museletter, for I would be no writer, had it not been for her gifts to me. Her name was Sr. Robert Joseph when she taught me and later sponsored me when I entered the convent. Today it is Margaret Lalor.

She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King in Selma, taught us how to organize unions, always spoke out against injustice and began every class, not with a prayer, but with a poem. She left the convent in the early 70s and we did Europe together, worked in factories in Pennsylvania and California together, got me through college together. She is now nearly 75, walks with a cane, works for $6 an hour part-time as a Hospice dispatch operator, and has no health insurance.

When I saw her in June, she told me her plans for when she dies. "I'm giving my body to science," she said, "so nobody will have to bother about a thing. And when you hear the news, I only have one request. That you sit down and take time to listen to the Mozart or Verdi Requiem. I'll BE there. I've heard that music so many times I'm IN it. I'm IN that music, so you'll know I'll be there." That was all.

And today, I read this from Isadora Duncan:

"..when I listened to music the rays and vibrations of the music streamed to this one fount of light within me-there they reflected themselves in Spiritual Vision not the brain's mirror, but the soul's, and from this vision I could express them in Dance...It would seem as if it were a very difficult thing to explain in words, but when I stood before my class of even the smallest and poorest children and said: 'Listen to the music with your soul. Now, while listening, do you not feel an inner self awakening deep within you--that it is by its strength that your head is lifted, that your arms are raised, that you are walking slowly toward the light?' they understood. This awakening is the first step in the dance, as I conceive it."

All the power is in the arts. The soul force, the light, the way home. It's in the arts. It's how God gets into the world...through our hands, our voices, our songs, our poems and stories. Don't hold back anymore. Quit that job if you must. Work part time. Sell some things. Move. Do whatever you must to be true to the creator inside who came here with purpose, on purpose, FOR a purpose. The world is on fire. Get your hose, spill out your genius, spray us with your light till we're drenched and laughing. The kingdom is here. Nirvana now. That's what I say. Nirvana now.
